Confirmed Case Of Rabies In Hinesburg
The Town received a call from the Vermont Department of Health on August 13th advising that there had
been a confirmed case of rabies in a skunk in Hinesburg on Postiche Lane (just south of the village off
of Route 116).
Although we do not hear a lot about rabies in Vermont, this is not an unusual occurrence since rabies
has been detected in Hinesburg in the past.
It's wise to keep in mind actions that should be taken to prevent rabies, such as:
- Vaccinate domestic pets and livestock
- Know who to call if you suspect a problem
- Avoid wildlife – We are fortunate to have easy access to a wide variety of wildlife.
These animals are an important part of our ecosystem, but should be appreciated at a distance. If you
think you have found orphaned wildlife, do not touch the animal. Call the Hotline numbers below.
- USDA'S Vermont Rabies Hotline: 1-800-472-2437 (800-4-RABIES)
- Vermont Department of Health: 1-800-640-4374 (Vermont only) or 802-863-7240
- Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department: 802-241-3700
