Hinesburg Affordable Housing Committee
July 10, 2008
Committee Members Present: Rocky Martin, Carl Bohlen, Bruce Wheeler, Dale Wernhoff
The meeting came to order at approximately 7:05 PM.
Guest Speaker Postponed: David Carse, a local developer, was invited to tonight’s meeting but had to cancel. He was to discuss a development that he is planning east of route 116 and north of Geprag’s Park. We will try to reschedule him for next month’s meeting.
Discussion of Potential Affordable Housing Sites: Discussion continued on the 11 acre parcel off of North Road. The Vermont State Housing Authority is not interested in developing the site. The Essex Junction chapter of Habitat for Humanity is.
Available sites at the LaPlatte Headwaters Conservation Initiative on the Bissonette Farm were brought up. Their status needs to be determined.
David Carse’s project (see above) was mentioned. We will look into that in greater depth once we meet with David.
A new project south of the village on the west side of Route 116 was brought up. It’s only in the planning stages and we will try to get more information on it.
Additional Discussions: Status of the Bissonette land on the corner of Route 116 and Falls Road and if affordable housing could factor in to any plans for this site.
The Affordable Housing Committee’s charter – are we only concerned with the purchase price of a house or are we also concerned with the ongoing expense of home ownership.
Carl mentioned the concern of many of the housing agencies that their expenses are outpacing the money coming in.
Bruce is setting up an affordable housing blog. Once it is up and running we will post information on it.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:20 PM.
Next Meeting: August 7th – Talk to David Carse, a local developer, about a project located north of the village that he has in the planning stage right now (postponed from the May 1, 2008 meeting and tonight’s meeting).
